hi i have chinese painted or button quail pair that have hatched chicks for the first time the male is parent reared and the female incuabtor reared i have noticed recently the female pecking the chicks toes and picking them up the male does not do this and although seems less bothered about feeding them he will brood them and i wondered should i take the chicks out or leave them with her they are not bleeding but are a bit red and limp a bit most are 5 days old however one only hatched this morning so i was thinking if they make it to 2 weeks they should be fine as wing feathers will be through

First of all, they are Chinese Blue Breasted Quail, not painted quail...after research the name is not correct anymore....

They are NOT in the coturnix family either...

OK, to answer your question: Remove the babies from the parents before someone is killed. Some parents take good care of them, others just need more practice. I have pairs that were both reared by me hatch out chicks and take good care of them, others, well...they lost their opportunity. In the wild they will lay two clutches a year and that's it. When the chicks are mature, the parents will kick them out since they are monogamous birds.

You can make a nice brooder out of a fish tank with a pine bedding and a heat lamp and the babies will be fine.

You should nearly always remove an animal from it's parents if you know you can care for them without them, if they pick them up by the toes & make them limp...Please remove the babies, before any toes are removed or worse.

It would have been nice if she was a good Mother, but it dose not seem that's the case.

had to remove one baby and shes now fine with the others but will be keeping a close eye for some reason one baby hatched 5 days later and is a golden pearl as opposed to the other 4 which are 5 days older and are all cinnamons and she doesnt like this younger different coloured chick
