Button Quail Chat

Peep is getting very attached to me. When I open the door on her cage she comes running, peeping her heart out and sits in the door waiting to climb in my hand. She loves to have her chin scratched and to squeeze into my closed hand and sleep.

She has never seen another quail so i know she will be socially stunted though.

I also took a close photo of Annie while moving her to clean the cage. Both adults have lost most fear of me by now. Dont remember if i said but they've been housed in the bottom of my very large finch cage for about a month now. Its 5 feet long. Its big enough they even fly a bit.

that is absolutely AMAZING!! I have managed to get miss lily to take mealworms from my hand, but most are still really skittish overall.....We did our first real cage cleaning and foot spa of all 10 last weekend and overall they did well but not nearly that friendly!

My Pinga is like that. She loves her cuddles and scratches everyday.

Annie is not very tame, she avoids me if she can but once I corner her she doesn't struggle. She just sits in my hand.

Her mate Grover comes running and jumps up to snatch mealworms from my fingers and then gives them all to Annie. He struggles when held.

Their three 5 week old sons are more or less all as tame as their dad, Bean is a bit more jumpy. Popcorn is OK being held, but Cricket dislikes it and Bean screams and bites.

Peep thinks I am her mother, I was the first thing she saw as I assist hatched her, and I play with her throughout the day. She is the only one that seeks me out for attention, not just food. She loves to be touched.

I sometimes hold Popcorn and pet him, he'll cock his head to let me scratch his chin, but the other four adults only get handled briefly to clean cages as they would rather be left alone.

I was the first thing Pinga saw as she was rejected the moment she hatched, before she'd even opened her eyes.

She's now an adult, caring for her little brother, and still wants to be cuddled ny her mum, me.

Sorry for your losses. They're tropical, would not put them out at all. Mine get fluffed up and look uncomfortable at anything much below 70 degrees.

Thanks. Im pretty tropical here and think theyve proven to fare well as adults but just not youngins. The lows in the 40s the last few days havent fazed them, shes still laying in their draftless fishtank on my back porch, its been in the 70s by mid day everyday though. This is about as cool as it gets for anything more than 3 days ever. Ill drag out the extension cord if were gonna have another freeze but the grass is already looking very greenish and spring will be in full swing down here real soon.
