I looked through the forum here, I couldn’t find any information about button quail shell less egg.

We have chickens, so I’ve dealt with it with them. Typically it’s from them getting sick because we have Mareks and ALV. It’s been a three years.

Anyway, my now seven qty button quail are in the house, and this particular gal has a mate. They are almost 2 years old, I hatched them. They are in a 36 x 24 enclosure on premium coop sand brand, I clean it daily and they have lots of places to hide and play and lay.

This pair had another gal friend who died a year ago, suddenly. Since then, the male has been over mating her, so I try to separate him during the day so she can get a break. She has a nice strip of missing feathers down her back and on the back of her head 🤦‍♀️

She is also very skittish, whereas the other girl that died was pretty chill, and she was his favorite at the time.

Anyway, she eats wholesome harvest 26% non gmo quail layer feed, she has free standing oyster shell (direct from Gary Landry), and she might get chopped up organic greens on occasion, and some sprouts.

This has been about 3 to 4 months now, her shells are completely gone it’s just the membrane in the yolk. She lays almost daily.

I was giving her probiotics electrolytes hoping that it was just stress from her over lovingly mate. We also started Better Flock AvaPlex hoping that would help too, because I’ve seen tremendous improvements in my chickens with this by the way.

I would hate to lose her, and so would her mate…is there’s anything else I could do? Should I start a round of antibiotics? Could she be dealing with a reproductive issue from Mareks/ALV? I’m in Western North Carolina and the veterinarians here are nice but know about as much as Google… i’ve done a lot on my own dealing with Mareks/ALV and I’ve saved many of my chickens with my own research.

Thanks so much!

(Let me just mention that these TWO are alone in their own enclosure, I have three enclosures stacked in a cabinet, with two other groups in those enclosures just FYI.)

Two years old is old for a button quail. It sounds like she's getting enough calcium, so she could just be reaching the end of her laying life. I would recommend restricting her light for a while to give her a break from laying if you can. Giving her only about 8 hours of light per day should do the trick.

Thank you for replying, I was hoping to hear from you! Okay….So I have three other girls (in neighboring enclosures) who are laying fine? She’s been dealing with this for three months…ugh… to me it seemed like stress after her sister died and this boy is just overzealous… he cried for over a month for her

Antibiotics might be a good idea, but as I mentioned, I don't have a lot of experience with disease or administering antibiotics. What type and how much depends on what she has, and personally, I would want to have tests run before doing that.

I don't want to give advice on something that I don't know much about.
