ok, I think mealworms were the worst idea for my button quail. One of them began pecking at his mate’s toes after I started giving mealworms as treats. Their toes really do look the same. It caused one toe to turn purple, then brown, then black, and then it fell off. After that, he started working on the same toe on the opposite foot, also to the point of a segment of it falling off because of necrosis. She seemed to recover from the pain I could tell she was in with her limping, but now the middle toes are forming brown rings. I’m not quite sure if it’s some kind of condition now, or the pecking. He’s still doing it, and I can tell when he’s about to. They really adore each other otherwise, and my only other option is separating them, but the male won’t accept anyone else. They still cuddle and preen each other. Leo looks like he’s getting the best neck rub when she grooms his neck. The vet had her on oral antibiotics and pain meds, and that did nothing.
Anyway, I wouldn’t advise mealworms as a treat!
