button quail

I've read that 1:3 is a good ratio for quail, and as high as 1:5. If you're going to have a lot of birds, say 5 males to 15 females, you need a much larger space and lots of hidey holes for them to call their own. Of course, mine are still too small for that... I'm just going by the reading I've done in preparation for that day. I have one pen that has 5 males and 7 females - they'll have to be sorted out. But another pen has 1 male and two females, and life is calm in there.

I've heard it depends on how large a pen you have. They need more space per bird the mre birds you have together. I'm going to do 1/3 for mine. Right now I have a pair together and then two females in another pen.

Hopefully this doesn't duplicate, I hit submit and it blanked out. What I had said was I have my adult Jap. Quail together, there are 6 and the ratio is 1:3 male to female. And ALL the eggs have been fertile.

i was talking to shmooborp and i was offering to send a few quail eggs to shmooborp if shmooborp or you would like some.

the male quail might be aggressive according to what your feeding them. I have heard that if you feed them gamebird food it will make them more aggressive.

I've not heard that before...interesting! My adult pair is really spooky-I think I may sell them to someone who has a large aviary. They would be happier like that I think.
