Buying a new hen advice

Hi! We purchased 5 baby chicks in July, 2 didn't make it and now 2 of the 3 left are roosters. So we are thinking of purchasing some grown hens. I've found a couple local listings on Craigslist for hens that claim they are actively laying. Just looking for some advise in what I should look for or look-out for when buying chickens like this?

The 5 chicks were our first ever and obviously didn't go well, we really wanted a "pet" chicken that the kids could feed and would be friendly.

X2 on that. I would give any bird I intended to bring into my flock a three week quarantine period to make sure that it wasn't carrying any diseases.
