The most popular egg layers would probably be the commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and the various red sex links for brown eggs, they have various names depending on the hatchery they come from Red Stars, Golden Comets, ISA Browns etc.

Welcome to BYC - locally raised birds are your best bet. I am a big fan of leghorns.
