They were a little on the pricey side... Especially considering you can get day old chicks for under $5 a piece most places.

That's what I'm thinking. Being a)cheap and b)on a fixed income I don't want to spend twice as much as I need to.
I completely agree. My decision was fueled by the demand for the eggs. I risked losing customers if I didn't get the new chicks started now. They also had a breed I really wanted to start raising, the French Black Copper Maran.

Orchard Ridge Farm treated me well though. Again, not sure the increased price is worth it for most folks. I spent about $80 on 8 birds (with premiums for certain breeds). At Paris Farmers Union I would have spent less than $80 on 8 layers and 40 meat birds.

Two thoughts.
#1 Seriously, you guys are gnarly for this thread. Reading through it I found 2 separate options for the Easter Eggers or Araucanas I want to mix with the Golden Reds & White Leghorns I'm ordering from Reich's Poultry Farm. They're down in Marietta (Pennsylvania), but they've got long established street cred, offer 15 pullets for $42 (both breeds I mentioned), and since I have relatives nearby I cut a deal that keeps my chicks from being shipped via USPS. They do not, however, sell any blue or green layers, so I'd been confined to Tractor Supply (in Skowhegan) for my colored egg options. Orchard Ridge and Paris Farmer's Union just blew my options open for dates AND breeds. Cheers!

#2 Having mentioned Tractor Supply, does anyone have experience with their chicks?
