Hello all!
After growing up watching my Great Grandmother raise beautiful chickens...and years of telling my husband I need chickens, it is finally becoming a reality!!
We are currently building the perfect coop (or what we think is perfect for now)! We will be purchasing our chicks this week and have a 2 brooder boxes ready! One is a small tub to start and the other box is a larger box, until they are ready for the coop.
My question is what is your favorite breed? I want a good layer, that my children can love and will be interactive with them. Any tips or advise is greatly appreciated!!

Welcome to BYC!

I am a huge fan of the Orpingtons...the Buff Orpingtons and the Australorps. Both of these breeds are very docile, kid friendly, great layers and are very hardy over all. My girls follow me around like drooling puppies looking for goodies or a nice soft lap to sit on.

You might want to start in our learning center here on BYC for lots of great tips and hints on raising your new brood....

While you are there, check out our breeds page to see what other members are saying about the different breeds...

Here is a nice external breeds page that I like. Lots of quick info on each breed...

Good luck with this new adventure and welcome to BYC!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some great links to get started with! I personally really like a mixed flock, love the different colored birds and like the different colored eggs. Easter Eggers are always fun because of the blue/green eggs, and Welsummers because of the darker brown, like TwoCrows mentioned Orpingtons are nice layers that make great pets, Sussex, Delawares, Wyandottes are a couple more breeds to consider... and Cochins and Silkies don't lay many eggs, but they are quite popular as pets.
