Hello all!
After growing up watching my Great Grandmother raise beautiful chickens...and years of telling my husband I need chickens, it is finally becoming a reality!!
We are currently building the perfect coop (or what we think is perfect for now)! We will be purchasing our chicks this week and have a 2 brooder boxes ready! One is a small tub to start and the other box is a larger box, until they are ready for the coop.
My question is what is your favorite breed? I want a good layer, that my children can love and will be interactive with them. Any tips or advise is greatly appreciated!!

and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some great links to get started with! I personally really like a mixed flock, love the different colored birds and like the different colored eggs. Easter Eggers are always fun because of the blue/green eggs, and Welsummers because of the darker brown, like TwoCrows mentioned Orpingtons are nice layers that make great pets, Sussex, Delawares, Wyandottes are a couple more breeds to consider... and Cochins and Silkies don't lay many eggs, but they are quite popular as pets.
