Hi There,
I am brand new to the backyard chicken world and am just about to add chickens to my coop for the first time!! We are excited.

I took a local class on raising chicks (at Ashley's Chickens) and decided that chicks were more than i wanted do (keeping them in the house for 8 weeks in the summer with extra guests and dogs at the time).

I am looking to buy pullets that are old enough to live in their coop, I can not find anywhere local to buy some. I would like 6. I live in Gloucester, MA and am willing to drive 20-25 miles to pick them up... Does anyone out there have any places that they could recommend i call?

Thank you kindly,
Alisha

It's never necessary to keep chicks in the house. A broody hen raises them outdoors regardless of time of year. You can do the same thing with a heat lamp in the coop. This time of year I only keep heat on them for 2 weeks and then I only have one warm spot and lots of cool space.

Started pullets will get you eggs quicker though.
Craigslist is a good place to start for older birds.

I never raise birds indoors unless it's well below freezing outside.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good suggestions above for finding birds, also check your local feed store bulletin board.

Welcome to BYC! You've been given some good advice and links. What kind of chickens do you want?

Get in touch with Ashley at agway where you took the class. She sells starter pullets and I think is taking orders now. I think she will keep them til they are 8 weeks old. She also has some that are a couple weeks old as well if you are not interested in day olds. The store number is 978-774-1069

Ashley doesn't have any pulleys for the rest of this season... I really wanted to get some now. If I can't then I will be ordering some from her next batch... I am looking for good egg layers... 6 of them, maybe 2 each of a breed. Good with kids and hearty for winter months

Yes, I think she is taking orders for fall pullets. I got some from her 2 years ago and they have done fantastic. Just got some younger ones from her about a month ago, chicken math has struck! lol good luck with your search, I may have a friend locally who may know of some pullets- just thought of him-I'll give him a ring tomorrow and see what he says.

Once you pick your breed look online for the breeders association. They will list breeders and there is usually one within driving distance.
Have fun!:welcome
