I decided to take my dad up on the quail offer and I’m getting 6 hen Coturnix quail tomorrow. The guy has Japanese, Italians and Whites. So I may get two of each. I wondered if there’s anything I should look out for when buying them? I know to check for lice and visible ailments. Also, is £40 a reasonable price for 6? Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

I woul recommend getting all the same kind. Sometimes the different breeds don't get along well together...particularly English whites and Italians.
I don't know if that's a good price or not...that would be 6 bucks and some change, apiece for them over here! That's a bit high for them here.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Thank you! Probably just stick with the average brown ones then. I’m gonna offer him £35, I do think £40 is a little high. Thanks again :)

I don't know what the going price is in the UK, but for here in the US, that sounds high.

Are you sure those are different breeds? They all sound like Coturnix (Japanese) to me, just different colours. The standard brown ones are often called Wild or Egyptian. I've heard that different colours sometimes pick on each other, but I haven't seen that in my own covey.

Yes they’re different colours :) do different colours lay different amounts?

Unfortunately he’s hard to speak to which is putting me off buying them.

From my limited experience, I don't think so. I had a small covey of jumbo browns that were awesome layers, but right now I'm raising falb fee, SSC, and am hatching out a batch of falb fee, grau fee, and pansy fee. I like the pretty colours. :D

They do sound nice, I’ll have to look them up! I like Silver quail, I think they’re just gorgeous

I paid $3 for each of my quail so $6 seems a little high to me.
