Hello to all.
I'm a new be, just doing a lot of research, reading and talking to anyone about, chickens, turkeys, goats, pigs and donkeys.
I met this nice lady Paddock36 in Rural King and starting talking and she told me about Back Yard Chickens.com so I thought this would be a great way to learn first hand about people that have these animals.
Going to retire in a few years and want to be prepared. My husband and I want to buy some land and raise livestock and live off the land. I figure I have this time to learn as much as I can before we make the trip into our new life.

Welcome to BYC, Cleo. Glad you decided join our flock. I've been retired now for the past 7 years and love it. The place to begin is our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there to get you started. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your retirement and in getting your flock.

Welcome to BYC!! I am also a newbie and just got my flock of 10 chicks. For my starter flock I got a little bit of everything. I got Americaunas, Black Sexlink, Barred Rock, and Buff Orphington. I have heard Sexlinks will give you lots of eggs if that's what you're looking for. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

How does the Rhode Island Red rate against the Orpintons for laying.

Nice to meet you Cleo. Do I spy an Australian Cattle dog (blue heeler) as your avatar?? Lots of chicken folks on BYC also have ducks, goats, turkeys,. guineas etc. and lately a lot have been setting up bee hives.

Yes your correct, that's the dog we will be getting when we retire and buy some land so we could have livestock and enough land to grow our own food.
I have been doing a lot of research and reading everything I can find. A very nice lady told me about "Backyard chickens" she told me that I would learn a lot and the people on are great.
Thanks for you help.
