Everyone make it a great day! :celebrate

Yes there have definitely been nests “elsewhere”, I can think of three big ones offhand, two were very safe and used by multiple hens, one was ridiculous, one hen laid maybe 100 eggs in the back of a fire truck, I saw her head over there and looked all over the ground many times before I gave up; we moved the truck in the fall and I finally saw all her eggs rolling out of it like little grenades all over the driveway. No one showed interest in setting on those nests, it was lay and walk away.
I’m trying to stop buying chicks for many reasons, it’s taken me a few years to find the right breeds, after this year I’ll be producing all my own stock (hopefully)
Perhaps you've just been unlucky.
There are many posts on BYC from people who have supposedly non broody breeds go broody. So just anecdotal evidence suggests that non broody can go broody.
It's also interesting that once feral colonies of previously 'kept' chickens survive. The range of breeds in such colonies has never been full documented but what little documentation there is suggests that the breed range is quite extensive.
How people get chickens here where I live and many other places in the world is so different from the American back yard and hatchery model that maybe comparisons are not relevant.

No feral chickens surviving here that’s for sure

Canadian back yard ;)

But I take the point. It’s just that my options are limited here; I suppose if I didn’t give a thought to biosecurity I could buy chicks/eggs from all over, but I have preferred to go with the large hatchery option where there is some oversight , it’s not perfect but the best option for now. I’ve been to a couple swaps and was appalled at the condition of the birds, the containers and the sellers. Judgy? Yes, but if that’s all you have to go on.....

And there is zero chance of a feral chicken EVER finding her way here, I dont even have many wild birds lol

Good morning cafe. Thanks for the coffee, Debby. I drained the pot you made and put a fresh one on. Enjoy.

Nice sunrise, Sean. It's warm here at 34F but has been raining all night so it's rather gloomy out.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to the wonderful couple Sour and Princess! :love
Thanks Tonya, its 42°F here with a slight breeze. Thanks for the fresh cup...I need more coffee!

I don't know how comparable Finland is to where you are but a friend of mine (Internet) is involved inn the conservation of a number of landrace breeds that were in danger of dying out.
Perhaps instead of the usual hatchery fare something like these breeds might be more suitable. I must admiit, if I was a hen I wouldn't be interested in raising chicks in that lot.:D
