Well I turned in my drawing final today. I'm pretty dissapointed in it, but I'll post a picture later tonight anyways. It would have been a lot better, but I have horrible time management skills and didn't start it until 2 days ago. One of the drawings was done at 3:00 A.M. this morning and I was dead tired. That should give you an idea of the quality... Over beak, I want to try to do a large drawing. Mine average about 8 by 11 but I think it would be really cool to do something thats like 24 in by 36 in.

Although, I'm probably not the best person. There are far more capable people on this thread than me, but I know a thing or two.

I suppose the first thing would be to start looking at some nice pencils and tortillions. Not that I'm saying you don't have nice pencils, but it does make somewhat of a difference when you start using pencils like 2B, 6B, etc. You can normally find them at craft stores. Then, practice your shading. There are probably a million different books out there that can help, which is what I did for a while (though I'm mostly self-taught). When I couldn't figure something out on my own, I looked towards a book I got for school a couple of years ago and that pretty much got me out of tough spots.
Practice as well. Like, seriously, practice. I can't stress it enough. o_o It might be a bit tough for you to adhere to the whole drawing realistically, because of how well you are drawing your Monster high and cartoony stuff. But that should stop you, I honestly don't know hwy it would.

So...do any of you ever look through old sketch books and find stuff you never finished? I was jut looking at one, and found a picture I started drawing this summer but never finished it.




There's more to the picture, but I decided not to embarrass myself too much by showing it. Also, here is a sketch I did during a Latin class recently.

Beautiful! I love how you pushed the darks but still kept strong highlights. And that's amazing for just a sketch! I always use grids to get everything exact and I envy those who can think of somthing in their heads and put it on paper.

There's nothing wrong with that, because erm, I do too.

I used a really nice one a while ago, but it ran out of lead and I couldn't re-fill it. >.<

I'm pretty bad at shading as well. But over time, you pick up on things and then you improve. I'm sure you will as well, it just takes time which sucks. A lot.

I'm quite proud of the second one because I normally fail at drawing profile sketches, even with a reference.

Here are the pictures of my drawing final.. Sorry about the bad quality photos, we had to frame and mat our finals and I forgot to take pictures of the drawings before putting them in the frame. Can you guys tell which one I did at 3 in the morning? I think it's pretty obvious. The only one that I'm happy with is the one of the 2 african boys. The hardest part was cutting out the matting in the shape of puzzle pieces, it took forever!

I call it 'Connecting Cultures'. I want to use black construction paper to go around the drawings so that there is a black outline between the drawing and the white puzzle piece matting. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow.. It's already been graded, but I think the black outline would make the drawings stand out more, what do you guys think?
