BYC has helped me to understand killdeer better!

Me too! Actually, I don't think she, or I even knew there was a nest anywhere around. She just liked when they flew in the air. She was a pretty obedient dog, that I didn't let out of my sight, so fortunately, had she found any, I most likely would have been able to intervene. But still, yes very glad we didn't come across any babies. I really like how the male makes the nest, and the female "approves" it. Sounds alright to me!

Thank you desert darlene, I've heard the name Kildeer but didn't really know what they were except some kind of bird. You are learning things from BYC and I AM learning from your posts. You made me very curious about Kildeer, so I intend to do some research about them, starting with your blog.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I wish my grandfather was still around (he would be 104 if he was!). He was an egg and dairy man and farmer and knew a lot about chickens and eggs and often told stories about them. He also used to work at all the big 3 automakers when they were all small companies in Detroit. We got close during the last few years of his life because I got really interested in cars. Now, I'm starting to get into poultry, though it is mostly ducks right now and I still haven't gotten any of my own birds (plus I have allergies to deal with, too)! I think he would have gotten a kick out of me being on this site so much.

Hey, I just noticed that this thread was moved from the main BYC forum to breeds, genetics and showing. How strange. I guess the mods felt it fit better here even though killdeer aren't a chicken breed.

That is a little strange. Maybe it's a hint that you should try for a chicken, killdeer cross.

I never pay attention to which forum a thread is in, just noticed it jumped to the top of my posts.

LOL. I was wondering where to put this thread, so I started it in the main forum because it says BYC feedback. I would have thought that they would move it to the hobbies, chicken stories or other pets.

I don't think the killdeer will go for breeding with a chicken or a duck. Perhaps another plover, though. They have been seen laying eggs in other plover's nests.
