We need more chicken people in MA!!! Great choice of breed, getting the silkies, they are very friendly. I wish you luck and if you have any questions you can go visit the learning center at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/ or ask me!

Welcome to BYC! I used to live in Fitchburg, but have since moved west to the Sturbridge area. My father is still there. I'm still in my first year of chicken keeping myself. The folks her on BYC have been very helpful. I started out thinking I wanted 3 birds, but then discovered the joys of "chicken math". I ordered 7, then added 4, then added 4 more. Now one of my hens went broody, so I let her sit on a clutch of eggs and we've added 5 more! After a few losses due to free-ranging my birds, and re-homing some roosters, I have an even dozen. By the way - seeing a hen raise chicks has got to be one of the best things in life!

Good luck with your adventure!

First time chicken owner in North Central, MA. We have 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Welsummers, 2 Barred Rocks, and 1 RI Red. We had 2 but sadly lost 1 a few days after receiving her. They are a riot. They are almost 3 weeks old.

Welcome! Sorry to hear that you lost a little one. That's never easy.

And yes, chickens are a riot AND also addictive. After two years at this we now have a flock of 29 birds representing 15 different rare, heritage breeds. Every one of them with a name and its own personality...

I know that our local 4H farm is selling RIR and Rock chicks if you decide you want to replace her. PM me and I can give you more info.

Not so new a chicken owner. Getting in on the thread so I can get some support from chicken/poultry folks. I am trying to move down that way and have a dead line. My birds have a home so they are fine. the kids have child care/summer camp, so they'll be alright... if I can find a place to live. I need a place to live short or long term that would allow my dog and the dream would be the chickens too. I raise a rare breed and hope to stick with the work I started. I am trying to stay in the area near Montague. If anyone has any leads or suggestions please please get in touch. I have to be out of here for the end of June. I am not a bad tenant at all just that the land lord is going to move back in here. So... chicken support and otherwise would be FANchickenTASTIC. Thank you. 3br optimal, 1 short term is fine

Hi Everyone. I have a friend thats actually in RI, but close to MA border. She hatched out chicks for her school classroom, and had one chick that was splay legged. She is using the chicken chick's tutorial on how to "fix" the chick. I guess that after the class experiment of hatching chicks, she is returning them to the farm she got the eggs from, but she is pretty sure that they will not devote the time to this chick alone and will let it die/ cull it.

I cannot take the chick and raise it either because for the next few months, I am pretty much never home, thanks to work and school.

Is there anyone out there in the eastern MA/RI area thats willing to take this chick on?

HI fellow Massachusetts chicken owners!! I am new to BYC - just joined yesterday looking for advice with an injured bird. Have been reading on the site for over a year now - we started with chicks this time last year and were really enjoying them, unfortunately a fox killed 4 of them 1 week ago (in the middle of the day!) We still have one healthy Ameracuana and one injured buff orpington who I am hoping with recover. Ours were free-range and I guess we just learned the hard way why that is not always a good plan (this time of year, especially, I guess. Anyway, we are looking to replace a few and our hoping to find some chicks. I would definitely be interested in knowing where your 4H is located because if not too far from us I would want to get some of their chicks. I am not sure how to send a PM on this site yet though!! Also, our local feed store has some 2 week old chicks but apparently they are NOT vaccinated for Mareks. Does anyone know how important that is in Mass? Our others came from a hatchery a year ago and are vaccinated.
