David Attenborough:
The Arnold Palmer Cuckoo Bird is a most devious, shrewd mum. She will lay her single egg in the nest of a chicken. The chicken hen at first appears baffled, but the broody instinct is strong and she will incubate the Cuckoo’s egg along with her own. The Cuckoo chick has its own plans; it will hatch after 17 days. This is a full four days prior to when the hen’s chick would hatch. Once the Cuckoo chick hatches it will gently putt the hen’s egg out of the nest and then drive it into the pond on the 10th green, thereby eliminating its competition for resources. The chicken hen will care for the Cuckoo’s chick as her own, none the wiser.”
