BYC question and answer thread....

I can't say for sure, but I think its because she likes it. I have a bird just like yours, a Dutch Bantam hen named Pip. When I pet and hold her, she closes her eyes, makes chirring noises, and seems to almost fall asleep. She especially likes it when I scratch her head and neck.
X2. My chickens do this often when I hold them.

Thanks!Oh and Amelia did this weird yawn thing were she opened her beak wide.I saw her eat some bedding could she be choking.She only did it once then started chirping again.Does she sound okay?

My chickens yawn every once in a while. It isn't anything to worry about if you only saw her do it once.

IDK without hearing her... does she seem to be eating and drinking regularly? also i had a hen that did close her eyes as if in pain... and she died from crop impacting... not to alarm you or anything but maybe look into that... if any of the symptoms seem to match i would treat her for that... but it could also be a very tame chicken who loves to be petted!

yawning is very normal too... also if she seems to be standing in one position for a long period of time then i would be worried about her having the sour crop... but if she is moving around normally than she should be fine...

@luvmychix
some breeds if you look up the breed of certain hens it will say that they don't go broody often... some will say excellent mothers or something.... as for Silkies they get broody very often so they would be excellent mothers... White Leghorns don't get broody a lot.. so they would probably not be excellent mothers...
