Kind of like how Google Sheets is just an online version of Excel (isn't that right Kathy, or am I wrong? Spreadsheets give me the heebie jeebies) isn't Google Docs just an online version of Microsoft Office? Their tools are very similar if they are different.

I have Microsoft Office on my old machine, but I only used it to make growth charts for the birds. @Kiki might know.
For writing contests, we usually use one of the free online word counters like https://wordcounter.net/.
But seriously, most people are going to be typing in Microsoft Word. I would copy and paste all entries into Microsoft Word to get the word count from there.

Writing is not my thing, so probably not, though I might run all of the entries through a spell checker.
