Well, you could set just one incubator worth. That way you aren't trying to acclimate 40 or more chicks to cooler weather. Cause you know if you set 50 eggs, you'll get an astronomical hatch rate!

This thinking is how you end up with 50+ chickens in 8 months, just be warned

This is the conversation going in my head, rationalizing at it's best/worse:

I really should only shoot for about 10 so I can keep them in longer if the weather goes to crap.

I had two people call this past week asking if I had any chicks left. So I should set a few extra, then half will be males.

If I want 10 pullets I have to set 20 eggs, then a few extra just in case some don't hatch, so 25 . . . minimum

That's very true! I'm looking at hatching eggs on ebay. I don't have an incubator yet, but getting one won't be an issue when I'm ready. I want to add more bantam cochins in other colors. And I'll need more Orpingtons, especially if the one I lost was a female. That would leave just 2 pullets and the cockerel.
