One of my first jobs back in the 1980s was working in a movie theater. They gave us a written math test as part of the interview! Just a bunch of basic addition and subtraction problems.

The theaters had computerized cash registers so we didn't have to do any calculations in our heads but I guess they wanted to be sure we could if we needed to. It's scary to think that someone today couldn't do that.

I remember going to a fast-food place about 15 years ago where my bill was something like $1.63. I tendered $2 and the "cashier" carefully counted out $0.63 back to me. I looked at and told her I'm sorry but that's not right. She said yes it is, it's sixty-three cents. I knew I could not explain it to her so I asked her to get her manager. I explained the situation to him and I saw his face fall as he realized she'd probably been making change this way her whole shift. He told her to go make drinks and sadly thanked me as he corrected her error and sent me on my way. I was shocked and sad.

There is not a lot of math in Nursing but there is some.
Mostly mixing medications to the right strength (usually done by pharmacy) and setting administration rates (drip factors, now done by pumps). I hear nurses complain about having to be tested on this because it's all automatic now. I simply remind them "That is exactly what we all said right before Katrina hit."

I worked one place where a very common bill was $10.10. People sometimes handed me a twenty, and then found a dime after I'd wrung it in to the register. No problem, gave them a $10 back.

I worked with someone who couldn't do that. 😬

I also worked with someone who couldn't do fractions of an inch on a tape measure when measuring a sheet of MDF to cut into pieces. He was supposed to cut pieces 10 3/8" x 8 3/8 (eg) on panel saw. He wrecked a LOT of wood. (Some of it could be used for smaller pieces.) When asked, he said, "Oh, I don't do fractions."

I would have been told, "You don't do carpentry anymore either."
(My daughter was helping me do that when she was 6yo!)
