The head of the bolt he was tightening snapped off and the engine block is probably ruined.

He is working on some unusual engine block. Maybe he is dealing with left hand threads.

Just a bare block, always hated left handed threads. If I recall right, Chrysler products always had left handed threads on the left side wheel studs and right handed on the right back in the 70's
