I am getting pullets (buff orpingtons) in roughly a month from my breeder. I know from being around his operation he feeds and waters out of open dishes. I am going to build my own feeders (PVC pipe) and waters (plastic jugs with nipples). My question is when I put the pullets in my run is there anything I will have to do to help them learn how the waterer works? Might sound stupid but I am particular about making sure my animals have plenty of clean water.

What type of nipples? Horizontal might have a slightly longer learning curve. To teach them you can pick up a few of the birds and press their beaks against the toggle to dispense a few drops of water, let them lick it up, repeat, and release. If half the flock figures it out the rest should as well, or if it's only a few birds then I'd do this with all of them.
