You need to do what we all had to and read Moby Dick then you will understand some it was required reading for allot of us old folks.

I also read it in high school. However, that was 54+ years ago and I sure as heck don't remember it enough to know that passage and I am not going to reread it to understand a joke. So, I guess I'll have to remain clueless.

I also have not read it, so the passage was completely out of context for me. I don’t even know who the character was. That made it even funnier for me. That, and the diction and style paired with the bored-guy-waiting-in-a-thrift-shop vibe. I guess I just have a strange sense of humor
