Dumpster diving is illegal, but why? It's trash. If I feel I can use it and keep it from a landfill, let me have it.
My mother wouldn't ever dumpster dive, but she would take things out of the model mobile homes we never bought. She told us to do it too because they were "gifts". Word got around about her and we started being followed when viewing the models.
As an adult, we lived in an apartment complex with tons of students. May was my favorite month! You won't believe what they threw out
Even managed to snag a drunk raccoon, just in time, the truck was about 50 feet away.

Like giving away food left over at restaurants, it's probably an insurance thing.

I heard I think it was Dunkin or some kind of place used to give stuff away and then someone complained and/or got sick or something and ruined it for everybody. But some companies do still give stuff away.

Apparently dumpster diving itself is not explicitly illegal but the issue comes if you are trespassing on private property, etc.
