I don't think it matters. But the one he had, and looking to replace, was a Speckled Sussex. Said he went out to check on them and the SS roo had got his head stuck in the fence and broke his neck trying to free itself. His place is up near Appling, GA--exit 183 on I-20.

Didn't make the meet... our seventh grandchild is due in September and we had a shower for the mommy to be. She got lots of beautiful things but my mind did wander a time or two over to that chicken meet.

Bill is home today and will listen for crowing (we're new with chickens and can only guarantee roosters through crowing).

They've been quiet on Sunday since the two confirmed ones left. It's like "keep quiet or someone will show up with a big box and carry you away!"

Well my chickens are hatched out and I ended up with 5 out of 7. One of those I don't believe ever had a chicken in it cause when I opened it up it just looked like a grocery store egg but the yolk was runny, no blood or body parts....I suspected it wouldn't hatch cause it looked empty when I candled it but I took the advice on here and left it in the bator as long as it wasn't stinky or weeping cause this was my first candling and hatching experience. The second egg confuses me because there was a fully developed ready to hatch chick in it, but it never did pip, it was already dead when I opened its egg. The only thing that I noticed was the membrane seemed tough but it didn't look shrink wrapped to me- albeit I can say I've never actually seen that but it looked normal.... any thoughts on what possibly could have happened ?
Thanks!

Some just don't hatch. Theres a lot of reasons or possibilities, nutrition in parent birds, humidity & temp fluctuations, infertile egg...the list goes on and on. I just take it as is and move on to the next batch. BUT, 5 of 7 is really good!!
