Cabbage is bad for them???

There was one case I read about, of broccoli being a problem, when truckloads of it were given to cattle in a feed lot. I read the original report, but I don't remember all the details, as it's been quite awhile. Feed lot animals sometimes get huge amounts of a particular food all at once, because it's cheap. They also get fed some kind of nasty stuff sometimes, because it's cheap.

These toxic lists are shared around, sometimes with very limited information given about the food or even what species had the problem. A lot of foods are really nutritious and safe as part of a balanced diet, but it's a problem to feed massive amounts to feed lot animals. Ruminants in particular can eat too much of particular types of foods and have problems.

well said digits.
Much information on plant toxicity is in regards to mammals - mainly humans and ruminants.
Birds are not mammals and are naturally free foraging creatures, in my opinion they have a pretty good sense for turning away from things that are not good for them . . . other than insulation . . . and the one hen I have that likes antifreeze - which by the way is deadly to most animals we know and doesn't faze her a bit.

Oh I can't wait to do that!
I hung cabbage in the coop and it sat for a few days. Now that they've figured it out it doesn't last a day. I hung a whole giant cucumber and it disappeared too.

and re Nifty's quote at the bottom of the toxic foods list... I heard a strange noise in the shop one day, and finally traced it to a hen picking at sheets of styrofoam.

They all seem to like it, so now I have to hide it. Nothing is safe from them! Thankfully they all seem to be thriving.
