If there's a central post office where the chicks will be before arriving at your nearest location, and it's not too far from home, see if you can pick them up there. It could save hours, or even a whole day.
It doesn't hurt to ask.

I ordered 15 mixed large breed pullets from Cackle Hatchery in 2017 and received 2 extra, both pullets. In 2018, I ordered 15 mixed Bantam pullets and once again received 2 extra, both pullets. I have been very pleased with the Cackle Hatchery birds after ordering from Murray McMurray Hatchery in the past. Any extra chicks I received from them through the years have always been cockerels.

Most of the time when the hatcheries include extra chicks (packing peanuts) they are male chicks but you could get females. The hatcheries guarantee is 90% on sex. Good luck and have fun...

I ordered 6 pullets from Cackle recently and they sent 8... the extra Barred Rock was easy to tell but the other was not... I called them and they had the info on the computer, it was an extra Easter Egger, totally different coloring from the other one they sent...
