Cackle hatchery

How is your luck with this hatchery is it good or bad. Are your birds what you wanted or no. Were your birds all live when picked up and if not how many fatalities. I just picked mine up 11 Hamburg’s and 11 phoenixs 24 hours later 5 Hamburg’s 4 phoenix anyone had bad luck with their purchase recently or in the past?

I picked up 11 chicks from Cackle hatchery: 8 black australorp pullets and 3 brown leghorn pullets. None had any health issues, all were lively and quiet, and breeds they were supposed to be, and not more than one was a cockeral.

I was very happy with the health of the chicks and the box, heating jell, and bedding/litter, and thermometer Cackle gave me with them. The interaction with the employees was pleasant, professional, and helpful.

I've always had good results with Cackle and every other major hatchery I've purchased from. Any time I did not, the problem was not due to any fault on Cackle's part, but the issue was with USPS, and Cackle always made it right immediately at no cost to me. One year it was not even USPS's fault, but a blizzard hit during the days the chicks were in transit and none the chicks survived. Cackle shipped out a replacement the following week and if I remember correctly there were no losses.

I am looking at Cackle for my next batch of chicks, even tho they are further away, and I have to do by mail.

Pardon me for what is a silly question, but I am either not seeing the info on their site, or confused by wording.

Under the breeds, it says "minimum of 3 to ship". Am I reading that I have to get at least 3 of each breed I order? Can I get only three total in the order, or is the minimum higher?

Minimum 3 to ship means you can't buy less than three of that kind ("kind" being my word for type within one breed) and have them shipped to you, even if you are ordering other chicks at the same time. It doesn't matter how many other chicks you order at the same time.

So, I could not buy one buckeye pullet or one heritage rhode island red pullet or one black ameraucana pullet even if I bought other chicks in the same order.

You can order 3 buckeye straight run as your total order. You would pay a small order surcharge of $20 in addition to the cost of the chicks and the shipping charge.

Or you can order 15 chicks or more and not pay the small order charge, they just have to include at least three of any given type of the ones with that designation.

For the most part, pullets and straight have that designation and males do not. I think there are some exceptions to that but I looked at just a couple now to see if it was generally the same; I haven't looked at nearly all of the breeds since last year, I think.

You aren't picking them but to be more complete for anyone else, I think they worded it that way because you can get 1 of a given kind if you pick them up at Cackle. I'm not positive because I wanted at least 3 anyway when I picked up mine.

Thank you for the explanation. I thought that was what they meant, but I can see me making plans, then having it wrong.

I am itching to get a new - larger - coop and run built, and get moved. And I can't move till I get the coop and run built, because I'm not going anywhere without my chickens! lol

Cackle hatchery is great!!! I bought three ducklings from them a little over a year ago and they end up sending me 2 extras. all of them survived and were the correct breeds and genders. A local farm Friend of mine was going to pick up birds for them and pick up my ducklings for me, so I haven’t actually been there, but the people are very nice and helpful over the phone.
