I ordered from Cackle Hatchery in March and we got our chicks April 8th. All were alive when we got them, and after one week we lost only one chick, so overall the chicks are healthy and hardy. The only problem I had is that my order was not filled exactly as I had placed it. I ordered 5 white silkies (straight run), 5 silver laced wyandottes (pullets), 5 birchen cochin (straight run), 5 partridge cochin(straight run), 5 splash cochin(straight run), and 5 barred cochin(straight run). Well, that's not what I received. I ended up with 6 silver laced wyandottes (found out the most affectionate one of all is the rooster I did NOT order, surprise!), 6 partridge, 6 splash, 6 black chicks that I couldn't tell if they were birchen or barred, and my 5 white silkies. Well, now that they are feathering out I see that I have 3 barred and 3 birchen, or so it seems. I had to order all the cochins straight run, same with the silkies. So far I know I have at least one barred rooster, and the sixth wyandotte is a rooster. I also suspect at least one of the 4 remaining silkies I have is a rooster. They will be 4 weeks old on Monday and I have noticed a change in the voice of my male wyandotte, but all the others still sound like softly peeping chicks. So my order was off by only one, and all my chicks were healthy, my order was just wrong. I love my chicks just the same and I did pay to get my chicks vaccinated against Marek's disease. I don't know if that plays into why they all are so healthy, but for the most part I'm happy. I just think I would like to order from someplace where I can have more control over how many pullets I want, and how many roosters. I didn't want a lot of roosters, and I still am not sure exactly how many I have. I guess only time will tell. But for the most part I like Cackle Hatchery.
