Hi fellow chicken farmers,
I wish I had pictures of this, but I don't at this moment. I have a hen that is in stress, hiding in a nest box and dirty and wet underneath (hard to tell if it is a result for from being in a big rain storm today). She has something white and thin (1/4 inch width) but fleshy feeling, with a small curl or knob at the end that is hanging from her vent. When I look at a picture of chicken anatomy, it looks like something called the Caeca - chickens have two of them. It feels like it is drying up and I have no idea if I should try to slowly pull it out or push it back in! It really appears to me that this is part of the hen's anatomy. On first glance she doesn't appear to have an enormous prolapse.
Anyone ever had the caeca come out of the vent? Is this even possible?
Warm Regards,
Mama Knucker Hatch.
UPDATE:
I washed and soaked Duchess in Epsom Salts to get a good look at what I had. Now I'm wondering if by any chance I'm dealing with an enormous tape worm. Any thoughts, now that you can see what this weirdness looks like. Vent seems to be OK, but she certainly feels off since she was still hiding in the box tonight.
