Hey all, After a frigid winter here in Maine, a few of my girls are missing a lot of the feathers on their behinds, and have what I thought was a gooey white substance on their behinds, but after catching one and checking it out, it actually seems to be a calcium type deposits on what little feathers are left under their vents.

Is this normal, are they sick? What can I do for my girls to prevent this?

TY so much in advance for your help!

Mandy

Without a picture it's difficult to tell but - from your description - I'm guessing what you're seeing are lice eggs. Lice would also account for the loss of feathers.

You may find some lice pictures here on BYC via the search feature. See if that looks like what you're talking about.

A photo is going to be most helpful as there are few things I can think of that could be described in the way you are describing them that would be completely different conditions with completely different treatments, etc.
