We have a Black Jersey Giant who often lays eggs with some mild calcium deposits. But, today....its almost as if she's put all her extra calcium on one egg!

It seems to be an individual thing, anyway. We have an EE that lays super strong and thicker egg shells, but they are perfectly smooth, uniform color, etc. We have a BA that lays speckled brown eggs, while none of the other BA do. All the shells of all the pullets are good quality and not porous.

So, is this just an individual thing and not to worry about? Did my BJG just find the oyster shell particularly yummy this week?

Maybe it's not calcium deposits, but something else!

Feed a grower feed (for the extra protein) with oyster shells on the side. Treats 1-2x per week.

Here is today's egg with calcium deposits all over (and yes, you can feel them on the surface):

Weird that she's consistently laying these. Have you noticed her eating more calcium shells than the others? I like your feeding method, by the way.

Do you want to try and withhold the shells for a week to see what happens? Chickens store calcium in their bones, so they should be okay for that short amount of time

Edit: what does the feed label say the calcium level is?

Is she a "new" layer? I have 4BO that are 9mos old, laying for about 3mos, ferment their feed (Flock Raiser) w/Oyster Shells in a separate dish. I have one that gets extra color spots to her egg, now & then a lump of extra calcium. She's the only one, thinking it's her system adjusting, not too concerned.

Laying for approx 5 months. Seems pretty consistent overall.

I’ll have to check label, it’s pretty low as I recall since not alayer pellet. In fact we used a few large bags of layer pellets, but switched since we noticed calcium deposits on a few eggs here and there so figured it was too much calcium all the time, plus we had non-laying young pullets and males. The grower with oyster shell is a good solution to that problem. The only all flock I can get is at TSC and I’ve gotten a bad bag before, so tend to avoid it.

Are speckles crusty and hard?

'Speckled' eggs can happen for several different reasons...very few, if any, of which are a 'problem'.
Can be caused by:
Excess or uneven pigment coating.
Excess or uneven cuticle(bloom).
Excess calcium deposits.
Porous eggs can appear speckled.
Some birds lay them consistently, some only once in awhile.
The pigment or bloom can change appearance when wet, then change back when dry again.

As long as bird is getting a good diet and is healthy in every other way, it is no cause for concern.

They were white, dried, hard, and on top of the shell. But nearly flat.

This is the bird that I think sometimes lays a brown shell with vey tiny voids of brown color...meaning the white shell is nearly covered by color, but not completely. Shells are in good condition, not thin. Maybe it was bloom that got splotched in there!
