Calf Feeding Question *Update on Phillip*

I also posted on BYH. They are getting plenty of water. Their pen is kind of small right now so i think I am going to build them a new shed and pen. We're cleaning liek crazy but i know what overcrowding can do to a calfs system.

In the past I have always fed 3 times a day, my calf last year was fed three times aday, full bottles. This year, Brat is getting 4 bottles aday, she's fed on the same schedule as my goats, she gets 3/4 a bottle each feeding, she gets an egg in her morning bottle, she is technically getting the same amount as last years calf, just spread into 4 instead of 3 feedings, and she's growing like a weed! In my experience calves always act hungry! I think she'd eat herself to death if I let her. Are you offering starter feed? If not I would, right now after Brat's bottle I give her alittle feed to suck on, that seems to keep her attention while I finish up w/ the goats. She'll be 3 weeks old tomarrow and I've been feeding her this way since she was 2 days old.

So yes, if these were my calves I'd feed them 3 bottles aday (altough I wouldn't do it all at once if they are use to 2, I'd go slowly so you don't make them sick). I think I only fed my very first bottle calves (looong time ago, but I still have the steer and he's big and healthy) 2 bottles a day, and I'd give them a 1 pint bottle of water about 30 min after their bottles (this is what the seller had told me to do), I could be mistaken it was a long time ago, but whatever I did, those two grew very well.

If you post pics of them from above I bet some of the experienced bottle raisers may be able to tell you if they look thin! Post one before a bottle and one after!

As for Avery maybe someone w/ more experience will chime in, does he have a temp?

No abnormal temperature in any of them, they're also not too cold either.

I think Phillip is just waring out because of the tube feeding. And Maybe Avery wasn't getting enough?

I think I'd try to find someone w/ a nurse cow to take Phillip, he'll probably do fine on a cow, but I can't see him making it much longer as is. I'd take him and give him a try if you were closer. I don't have a nurse cow, but I am planning to get one at some point. Try craigslist, I'll bet someone with a nurse cow will be happy to take him!

I just listed him with all the info and that he'd do best with a nurse cow. We had a Jersey nanny cow before that was Great but she passed away of old age

I know this will probably sound harsh, but I'd really encourage you to stop the tube feeding. We never tube more than 2 or 3 days at the very most...even our cattle vet advices not doing it any longer than that.

It's okay, I understand what you mean. I know it's hard on him but I was hoping we could get him on a bottle, it's just not working though.

I didn't think so. Hopefully someone will call or e-mail & want him. this is a crappy situation. I don't think i will buy a Brown Swiss again after this.
