Basically, I didn't know any better. But because of the way that I am using (read bellow) I am going to continue to use it until it is gone, and then I will buy food grade. Plus, I have not seen any ill effets on the birds.

From a couple posts above:

Wath out for the hawks. I havn't lost one yet, but on the main run 16x48ft I have netting to protect them.

Last year our Boston Terrier was picked up by a Great Horned Owl when she was let out at night to pee. Many stitches latter, we still have the dog.

Well, I only have 32 hens 1 Rooster and don't plan on adding more. We only planed on having 30 hens based on a 20-25% "loss" factor, but we lost 5 to date and someone gave me a Polish Hen and Rooster. I got to 48 based on two factors:

Rule of thumb #1- 4 hens per 1 nesting box I have 12 nesting boxes 12x4=48.

Rule of thumb #2- Roosting space per bird of 12". I have 48ft of roost boards. 48ft / 12"= 48 spots.

I think that I got the above info from a book by "Storey", but I am at work right now and going from my memory

Wow, I've lurked here forever and finally signed up to post, and the first thread I saw after logging in was yours -- I grew up in Lompoc! Your pictures make me so homesick! Beautiful ranch and coop.
