California grey thread

Until recently I had California Grey roosters acquired from a producer of California Whites. I used them for one of my American Dominique lines in an ongoing effort to improve egg production and feathering. The California Greys and their crosses love to eat but did not promote foraging away from feeder. Roosters are hard on hens owing to mating drive and pure California Greys are prone to manfight.

California Greys lay white eggs... How did you get brown eggs from one?

i found out mine wasnt the layer of the brown eggs i was finding. my neighbors hen was getting into mines nest and laying eggs. she was the only hen i had soo i thought they were hers untill i say that hen in the nest

Another example of misinformation on the net. Excuse me, but a California Grey lays a white egg. Do some research if you have a barred bird and brown eggs you most likely have a barred rock but you definately do NOT have a Calif. Grey. I've had them off and on for nearly fifty years.

Yes, I'd like to know how the second poster got brown eggs from a Cal Grey. You obviously have a Barred Rock and not a Calif. Grey as Cal. Greys lay pure white eggs.

If you have a Cal Grey or Calif. White that even lays a tinted egg, it's not a true California Grey.

I have tinkered with the idea of getting these for over a year. Can you expand on their temperments--or does that depend on the line and the culling of manhaters.

I'm getting Cal Gray chicks in March from Privett. Everything I've researched and some folks I've talked to says they are quite docile, but good flyers. Fortunately I have a large covered yard.

oldtimeway if you have the time and the inclination to contribute to the CA Grey Breed page I just started here on BYC I am sure your experience would be invaluable.
