California - Northern

This is another hatch with mixed eggs (Pita Pinta, PP/CL mix, and Langshans). I just checked and one of the blue PP/CL eggs has a pip! I'm determined this time to leave the chicks in there until the Langshans have hatched. If none of the L eggs have pipped, I might remove hatched chicks. I just want to give my Langshans a chance to hatch without the shrink wrap issue. I just finished setting another group of eggs but I set the Langshan eggs a day before the PP eggs. I'm determined to get this right!
With my last hatch, two pipped on the turner rails on day 19! I quickly got them into the hatcher and the first two hatched over night which was day 20. When I went to work yesterday morning, there were three eggs left and two egg had a pip. I left the two alone in the incubator and went to work. The last one hatched a bit after I got home, leaving one egg in the incubator.

It was a good fertile hatch but thee were a lot of clears and two mid quitters. Hopefully the next hatch will go well--We need to get a bunch more of those SG Dorkings hatched! Kim already has a lot of Delawares so that is good news!

It's not that; her eye is completely white. Like the color of cooked egg whites.
Probably some type of infection, maybe injury, but once white like they they usually lose sight.

Good Friday morning! I

Fridays!!!

Who has chicks hatching this weekend? I have 26 eggs set to hatch. Tomorrow night it will officially be 21 days. Of course, I'm looking for pips already! These Pita Pinta/PP mix chicks seem to hatch a little early.

I have 2 pipped this morning out of 7 eggs (was 8 but when I candled at right before lockdown one looked clear). They are both BCM that a friend asked me to hatch for her. Today is Day 20, but the shells are very light so that might be why they seem a bit early. These have been in the Brinsea the whole time. I had it set at 99.0 and 35% until about a week ago. I was seeing that 100.0 and 30% might be better so adjusted it to that. Moved them to the Farm Innov on the evening of the 12th.

Thank you for chiming in, Walt! Do New Hampshires do well at shows? Are they a good LF breed to start with if you are wanting to show? Besides the NHs, what are some other dual purpose LF breeds that are good for showing and raising in the warmer areas of N CA? Am I correct in assuming that solid colored birds are easier for beginning breeders who want to show their birds?

I do have several breeds that aren't APA recognized. I have them because I like the breeds and I have other purposes for them besides showing. But I do see the value of raising breeds that are accepted as well as dual purpose. I have my BBS Langshans that I am working on and I have been thinking about adding another breed that is recognized. My layer flock is eclectic and full of trial breeds. I have been impressed with the Welsummer pullets that I have. They are friendly, good free rangers, and lay lots of huge terracotta colored eggs.

New Hamps can do well in shows. We did very well this last season with usually winning the American Class, several best large fowl and one reserve of show.. I only showed the same bird at one show all the rest were one show only....so it was not a one or two bird winning streak. The exhibition New Hamps are a great breed for beginners as they are bred so well that if you get decent stock it should be easy to hatch very competitive birds. Mine start laying at 5 months and the roosters weigh 9 lbs at 7-8 months old. They also eat a lot less than any other large fowl I have had and I have raised almost everything. Solid colored birds are usually best for beginners that want to show, but the NH's are really pretty birds and yoyu have to see them in the sun ot appreciate how beautiful they really are.

Here are a couple of pictures that Lual took of a male of mine and some females she hatched from eggs from here.
