California - Northern

Missed a million post! - these scared me so bad when we first moved here with the creepy way they click when they fly !

Anyhow here is a cuter photo of something from Tahoe ...

Little miss "no name yet" 7lb 6 oz girlie born June 26th 1:54 pm . Phew. Now we can enjoy summer together!
Congratulations! Good luck coming up with a name for the little sweetie. It was really hard for me to finally find a name for my son that me and my husband both loved. I hope 'the one' hits you soon!

Comparison of silkie skull to normal skull and the reason they are prone to brain injury. Once again man steps in to "tweak" animals for their own idea of esthetics. Mother nature never intended a brain case like this to survive.
You guys are really, really making me rethink the Cuckoo Silkies I've been ogling for months. Do Silkies without vaulting skulls still have the exposed brain, or is it just the ones born with vaults?
today we said good bye to a good friend and member of our family

Freda we miss you already

putting a friend like her down really Stinks
I'm sorry. Putting them down can be so horrible, but such a loving and selfless thing to do for them. I love black labs, she looks like she was given a good life with you.

To my fellow Pita Pinta breeders (Megan, Ron, Candy, Karen, Jules, Brice): I just discovered some things to look for when choosing which birds to use for breeding. I was spending time sitting in the pen with my 4 older Pita Pinta pullets when I noticed that 1 of them had white legs with black spots and the other 3 had yellow legs with black spots. I looked at my younger PP's and sure enough about 1/4 of them have white legs. The Spanish standard calls for yellow legs with black spots. I am going to have to take a look at my breeding flock at the farm and move any white legged pullets to the layer flock. Someone is passing on white legs to the chicks! At hatch their legs look pinkish but by 4-6 weeks, you can see the yellow. I also learned on the Spanish sites that less than 75% white feathers in primaries, secondaries, and main tail feathers is a disqualification. My flock has way too much black so I will be culling for that, too. They are supposed to get more white with each molt just like Speckled Sussex do.

Here is a list of disqualifications for the breed:

DISQUALIFICATIONS
White wattles.
Feathers in legs, feet and toes, more then 4 toes.
Presence of beard and or crest.
Less then 75% of white feathers in primaries, secondaries and main tail in the mottled roxa and mottled.
Eggs with white shell and/or rough to the touch.
Any comb other then simple.
Presence of red/orangish feathers, other then in the “ ROXA “.

Also, Ron, I found an article written in Spanish that shows several pics of white and yellow chicks. I think that the article talks about it but I need to put it through a translator or find someone to read it for me.

The crazier the poofey feathers are on a silkie, the more vaulted the skull is. Look for silkies that are not as crazy feathered.

Or better yet, get Crested Cream Legbars. They manage to have crested feathers without exposing the brain.

Or get some Amelias!

They are Crested Cream Legbars X Crele Penedesencas and lay Olive Colored eggs.

Thank you!

I already culled for white legs. My Boy Pepe has correct legs and the two Hens I kept have yellow legs.

Check for the German Standard or project standard. It might be easier to translate. Pita Pintas a big in Germany. They went crazy for them!

I know why now too.

Quote: Soe anyone know where you can get oxine in less than a 1 gallon size?

Remember my rescue silkie who was sitting on 2 doz eggs of a variety of ages when I got her? She is finally a mama. Gracie Belle hatched 3 boys and 3 girls and improved my pullet to cockerel ratio. We are now sitting at 12 to 27 out of 39 chicks hatched in the last 11 mos.

Also going down to Sonoma County to pick up Marans chicks from lawatt this morning. Gonna give the 3 littlest to my sizzle girl. I will be chick sitting the rest until she returns from visiting her sister but I may keep a couple of them too.

Pics of everyone to come.
Aww,,,,that is so great for Gracie! I'm so glad she has some babies to raise!

Quote: You just never know with those broodies!. My Blue Wyandotte (in my avatar) has been raising the chicks from the BLRW eggs from PapaBrooder. Only 2 of 12 hatched because of the arm breaking on the Brinsea turning cradle. One was a splash and the other I was hoping was blue, but is looking black now. The splash started to fade for some reason even after feathering out fairly well. It just got weaker and weaker and finally died a few days ago. Anyway... the broody decided that she wanted to sleep the coop again so I started locking the remaining BLRW chick in with the 5 Mottled AM chicks. They are about 2 weeks different in age. The broody was pecking at them if they got too close to her or the chick the first couple of days, but now se seems to have taken them on. She calls them when she finds a goody and sticks pretty close to them now. She chases off the other birds if they threaten them. I am very glad she is taking care of them because I think it helps them intergrate into the flock. It doesn't hurt that the Broody is the top hen in a flock with no roosters either...

this is what hes doing and he almost looks like hes having a seizure when his neck moves
Poor guy! Hope he gets better.

Hey guys! Im back and somewhat recovered. I caught something on the plane home and was out for 5 days.

The trip was great but the cursed foxes were at it again when we were away and got my jubilee!

Deb chrissy said you might have some older ones? I have to either find a hen or 2 old enough to go in with him or rehome poor henry he is not enjoying being alone. He can see other chickens and the marans hens sit next to him and chat on occation but he wont be good this way for long

.

Niky that silkie looks like it got pecked in the head. Look at the thread wry neck confused about treatment it has everything you can do. But if it is brain swelling and there has been no improvement for days it is not good. You should also be tube feeding or hand feeding and watering 3x a day. It can take a while to get over it ( weeks to months) there is no one cause it is a symptom of 5-6 different things.

Congratulations on all the chicks and babies!

Glad you are back! We missed you. Hope youy had fun on the trip and sorry you have been sick.

I candled the eggs (at least the ones I can see into). Lots are developing. A couple of blood rings (SS). The seramas are looking like no-go's though.

I will keep you posted!
here are my latest babies and the ones I am sitting for laura

The deep yellow in the back has me scratching my head. I thought the only brown eggs I had under her were Dels but that baby is a yellow chipmunk?? It may be one of Godiva's but I wouldn't have expected her chicks to be yellow when she is brown and dad is Red but it is definitely not belonging to one of the Australorps or a Del or Norma or my Speckled Sussex.

And the Marans crew plus a couple of Isbar crosses

Adorable! Surprise chicks can be fun!

Aww....so sorry Jason. There seems to be a lot of this going around in the last few weeks. I know about 4 other people who have had to do the same thing. It is always hard.

I've had silkies and showgirls now for a few years and only had one that I suspected was injured because of the vaulting. It is a possibility, but not a huge problem in my experience. The problem is you don't get the look you are expecting without the vaulting. Without the vaulting you get the typical feed store looking silkie.

Instead of getting this in a youngster

You get something like this

A lovable pet, but doesn't have that silkie look.

I am slowly translating some of this long article! There are pics that show the different colored chicks, different colored legs, and a naked neck PP! Some of the birds in my flock look just like the naked neck in photo 10!

Do you have a link for the German Standard?
