California - Northern

Just curious how do you know if your chicken has mites? Can you see them?

Most mite and lice species are quite visible. For the most part what we have around here are common poultry lice. These are reddish or whitish, oblong, and about the size of a flea. They crawl quite fast. They like to live in the feathers around the bird's vent and on the shoulders. They also lay their eggs - small, white clumps on the shaft of the feather - near the vent and on the chin of birds, especially bearded varieties. Sometimes you'll also see Northern fowl mites, though they aren't usually found in this area - these are pretty obvious, they are tiny (maybe 1/3 the size of a common louse) and they produce a dirty, oily black buildup in the feathers around the birds vent. I've seen a few cases of another mite as well - not entirely certain what it's called - but it looks similar to the poultry louse, except a bit smaller, lighter-colored, less quick moving, and it tends to hang out a ways down the feather, rather than right up against the skin.

Yes. Mine have northern fowl mites, and unlike the red mite (which only feed at night and live in cracks and crevices), they feed and live solely on the bird. I can see them crawling over my bird's faces plain as day. :sick

I have one chicken that has weird whit clumps on the feathers near her bum. I've cut it out and bathed her but I can never get it completely gone. Could it be mites? And if so is it possible only she has them? She is the only one with this problem..

Sounds more like vent gleet, which can be treated with probiotics. I was in the coop so I grabbed a bird I know needs treatment soon and pulled a couple feathers with lice eggs on them:

You can see how they tend to lay them in a clump around the shaft of the feather. These particular feathers were plucked from the underside of the tail. The eggs have this odd texture like a rough fabric.

Yeah that's not what my girls bottom looks like. It's bigger white clumps and her bottom looks red. None of the other chickens have it though. If it was the vent gleet would't others have it?

No, not necessarily. Vent gleet is a digestion problem. She may have either a weak crop or something stuck in it. The first thing to do is to check that out.

If you are not providing them with chicken grit, then start doing so. Give them a pro biotic but the one with the messy bottom may need an anti fungal. I have used monistat 7. Rub the cream on the red area around the vent and feed about a third of a suppository once or twice a day to her(It is hard to get them to eat it LOL!).

Lol oh boy.. should I use the external cream that comes with the monistat or the actual suppository? Yikes lol. I give my chickens unsweetened Greek yogurt with probiotics in it regularly. I don't offer grit though because we free range so I know they can get it. They also get free feed oyster shells. I feed flock raiser crumbles to my whole flock but like I said they get alot from free ranging also. She had this when we got her. At the time I thought it was stress. I was able to get rid of it for awhile but now it's back with a vengeance. She is pretty old. Maybe it's from the heat. Hopefully the monistat helps..

Re vent gleet, you may want to look at some of the BYC threads on it - there are some great photos and descriptions that could help you narrow down what you might or might not have with this girl. And casportpony posted a link that indicated possible other causes besides digestive fungus - sorry at my phone and not easy to cut/paste links. I've had a girl with some white buildup near her vent, not parasites, but likely not VG from what others say as it is supposed to smell pretty rank. You didn't indicate smell as a symptom...nustock might help with the skin irritation....

Ok so I promised an ayam cemani rooster to someone in here. As usual I'm awful with names and can't remember who and now I can't find the post lol. To whoever I promised the cockerel to its ready and pm me. Thanks. Also I have a second ayam cemani cockerel available to anyone else that might be interested. Free to good home. Thanks.

Hi All Ball, I never heard of nustock -- is that an OTC, a brand name, or ? - thx
