Hopefully now I can hatch my Rosecomb's finicky eggs. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh, and happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I took some pictures this morning of the hens hatched from store eggs.

This one has a comb that flops to the side--very nice leghorn comb. She is looking for treats of course--ignoring the cracked wheat that the ones in the top photo are eating--she suspects that I might have something better and is holding out!

Looks just like the girl I got from the Rockland eggs I hatched. She's a fantastic layer, and is the most curious and adventurous of all my birds. She's the first to try any new food I offer and is always exploring and hunting in the yard. She's also completely feral. I can't get anywhere near her, LOL!

Hi everyone, hope all of you are doing well!

Don't forget that today is the last day to nominate!

--- NOMINATION SUBMISSION FORM ---

We are very excited to announce the Official Launch of Phase 2 of the BYC Award Program! Phase 2 isYOUR opportunity to recognize those outstanding BYC members that always enrich your BYC experience. Do you know a BYC member that is exceptional and always goes Above and Beyond in their commitment to their fellow BYC members and the BYC community? If so, we want to hear about them!

We are now accepting nominations from the Community for those individual Members that consistently demonstrate a commitment to excellence in one or more of the following areas:
  1. BYC Educator: This is a Staff awarded accolade. We have changed this award to reflect only the highest standards. Only those who adhere to the highest standards of knowledge and education will be considered for this award. While nominations will be accepted for this award, the Staff will thoroughly vet each person and only those who meet/exceed the Staff's high criteria will be awarded the Educator Badge. Nominees must, among other points, have a verifiable reputation of providing information more than just "common knowledge," assist members in a positive and courteous manner, be open to feedback without getting defensive, and should maintain their good standing with little disciplinary action for rules violation.
  2. BYC Friend: These individuals are just plain fun and great to have around! They are our favorite comedians and enablers; our most cluckative. They are always accessible to lend a cordial and helping hand. Their enthusiasm encourages us, their empathy comforts us.
  3. BYC Spirit: These individuals best demonstrate ALL-AROUND outstanding service and commitment to the BYC members and community. While maybe not expert educators, they are trusted Educators nonetheless, as well as Friends to all. They are dedicated to the BYC Community as a whole, and strive to help promote, support and uphold its values and goals.
  4. BYC Greeter:

These individuals are our BYC "Welcome Wagon!" They are the members that are most active in welcoming the new members to our community, especially in the "New Member Introductions" forum. Nominees will be judged on a) How long they've been welcoming new members; b) How many new members they welcome; and c) The quality and friendliness of their welcome.

See all the awards here.

Nomination & Award Process:
  1. Use this Nomination Submission Form to make your nomination, and be sure to include a brief comment on why you are nominating the individual. Nominations with no comment and only a name cannot be accepted.
  2. Members may place in nomination a maximum of four (4) members per month; however, you may nominate only one (1) member per award category per month.
  3. Nominations are automatically forwarded to the BYC Awards Committee. They will validate and tabulate all nominations.
  4. Member must be active and in good standing in the BYC community to receive and/or retain awards.
  5. Members may be nominated for, and be awarded, in more than one award category; eligibility requirements must be met for each individual award.
  6. Members may not nominate themselves for any award; all self-nominations will be voided.
  7. Qualified Awardees will be announced quarterly and Badges given.
  8. The Awards Committee, at its discretion and by majority vote, may elect to reclassify a nomination to a more appropriate award classification.
  9. All nominations shall remain confidential and known only to the Awards Committee and BYC Staff.
  10. The Members of the Awards Committee shall remain confidential and known only to BYC Staff.

A question for the experts:
This morning one of my Sebrights had a slightly watery eye, and by lunch there were some bubbles around it. I saw her sneeze once, but no other signs of being unwell, and her eye actually looked better tonight. I have 5 other birds, but none of them have shown any sign of being sick. So should I;
1) Leave them alone and see how they do in the next couple of days (I've already added some vitamins to the water and given them extra treats on top of the treats they already get).
2) Separate everyone immediately and see how they do (although I think being away from the others would stress my hen out more, she's very close to her sister, my other Silver Sebright).
3) Give antibiotics to the bird that might be sick immediately.
4) Give antibiotics to all the birds.
Thanks for any advice!

I don't have a good answer but do they have a warm place? I might put the se rights in a warm area. It so cold at night.

All 6 of my chickens sleep in the house at night! In two separate crates; 2 feisty Sebrights in one, 4 mellow D'Anvers in the other. I brought the Sebrights in as soon as it started cooling off tonight; I could also keep one or both of them in the house during the day, but the 70 degree house isn't usually that much warmer than it is outside in the afternoon.

Is she a recent addition to the flock? Did all the birds come from the same place? Have you recently added any birds at all?

I would not segregate or treat her (unless she's new in which case new birds should always be quarantined away from the flock for 3-4 weeks before introduction). I would watch all birds very closely for 3-5 days to see if any others show symptoms and if hers continue. If no others show symptoms, then she may have an individual respiratory infection. These happen occasionally, though are less common than contagious respiratory disease. With that said, you don't usually see bubbly eyes with a simple respiratory infection, and respiratory diseases like Mycoplasma are some of the most common contagious diseases out there, so be quite watchful for symptoms in other birds.

After 3-5 days, if no one else is showing symptoms, try Tetracycline in the water of the sick bird. If multiple birds show symptoms, I would suggest ordering Denagard and considering having them blood tested for common infectious respiratory diseases, such as Mycoplasma.

How is she today?

It has been very windy the past couple of days. She may simply have something in her eye. There are other symptoms to look for:

Mycoplasma Gallisepticum. MycoplasmaGallisepticum: Is a type of bacteria which can cause respiratory disease in chickens and other poultry. It is often associated with swollen sinuses, sneezing and foamy watery eyes. In certain cases it can cause swollen joints and subsequently lameness.Feb 16, 2011

It does not sound like this and I bet the eye does not look like this either.
