HI Haleth - if you are near the Arboretum, check out Wes's Pets in El Monte. He has baby chicks pretty much year round, and he will even add a certain breed to his order if there are some that you want that he was not including. Then he will hold them for you once the order come in. He's very nice. There are a few other places too, but I've had the best luck w him and his chicks.
BTW, I'm in Altadena where many of us seem to have chickens. Say, we were at the Arboretum yesterday!

Hey - VistaCAChickLady - - -

I called every place I could find within 60 miles of where I live. The store you recommended in Vista (Country Feed Store) was the only place that had any laying hens. They were EXACTLY what I wanted - 5 or 6 months old - just laying. The RIR's were beautifully colored and were very plump and healthy. I bought 4 of them and drove an hour and a half with them in a box. They were perfect ladies and went quitely asleep. I put them in their new home late in the afternoon and by the next morning I had 2 lovely eggs. I think that is pretty good for Chickens in Winter. Thanks for the advice!

Hey all, I am in Ramona. Anyone close in SD who needs a couple of Americauna Roos? I am overrun with roos and decimated on hens. Very pretty birds, I can post pics if interested. They would be free!

Anyone in the area having trouble getting eggs lately? I haven't seen an egg since late August....don't know why, lost a huge bunch of flock to poisoned feed (don't buy anything labeled Krause's feed). Lost 17 hens and 5 roos. Bad news. The chickens left seem to be in shock or something (do chickens go into shock?) they just don't lay, all were good layers prior to the others getting sick. The ones who got sick did not survive, those who survived never got sick, so I know that is not it.

Maybe need more protein in their diet.

Any suggestions?

hello kmmp- so sorry to hear about the loss of your birds. If Krause's feed was bad- do you have recourse- I mean, will the feed store replace the birds you lost? I have used Krauses before with no problems but just recently switched to Layena because it seems on BYC everyone thinks it helps lay better. My birds are still young and have only just been laying several weeks but I get eggs every day. I wonder if you have a "secret" layer somewhere- who is stealing eggs and stockpiling them- or if you have a predator that eats eggs?
