LOL to Rick. Sometimes people do need to be reminded of their color genetics though. Give Oz a pass pretty please.

Oz I am finding most people are breeding blue to blue to get a wide variety of colors but I am on the hunt for Blues only and the last hatch I waited on produced only one blue which I have (crossing fingers for a pullet).

My goal is to rebuild my flock with hens who lay a variety of different colors, but all hens will be blue in color. I have a legalistic neighbor who ratted on me with out talking to us first. I'm pretty sure it was the rooster that pushed him over the edge but we had had chickens for well over a year. So just talk to us, right? We had to go from 25+ chickens to our legal limit of 2 (1 Blue Marans and 1 Blue Ameraucana) which is an insane number. Chickens are flock animals and 2 is a pair not a flock. Anyhow, the goal is between 6-10 hens only Our Coop and run are pretty large (6'X20' completely covered) and can house that number well without needing to free range, but if we did free ranged 2 at a time and they all looked similar our hope is the neighbor won't really know how many we do have. :) At least that is the hope.
We are currently raising 3 blue Ameraucana chicks, 3 blue Marans chicks, 4 Blue Orpington Chicks, and 1 Olive Egger in hopes to keep a pullet or two of each variety.
I'd love to find Blue LF Cochins and Blue Faverolles, but they are a little hard to come by.
I am very well set up to raise chicks so I figure why not raise up a few dozen right.

What lousy neighbors. They expect you to put up with their parties or all-night barking dogs when they're gone but you can't have chickens! I've never heard my chickens cackle all through the night but our neighbor has a high-pitched barking dog that goes non-stop when they're not home!

Some people like the No-Crow Rooster Collars (MyPetChicken.com) or make their own. There's some adjustments to get it right but many say it works to muffle the annoying long crows of roos.

Good luck with your Blue search. I personally do not like the sneaky aggressive Marans breed around gentle breeds like OEs, EEs, Amers, Favies, or Cochins. We re-homed an aggressive Marans who was downright mean to our Amer and Silkies. Her eggs were nothing close to "chocolate" and only 2-3 eggs per week - she wasn't worth her obnoxious personality.

I'm in search of a fem Silkie chick and maybe a fem Rhode Island Red chick? ..
JT area

Silkie chicks are not sexable until they grow out to juveniles. We waited to get a 3-month-old Silkie pullet because they are not identifiable without Lab tests and there's at least a 4-week wait for results so might as well just wait until a Silkie grows out until it's identifiable at 2-3 months. We got our last Silkie pullet through Wes's Pets and Feed in El Monte when a private breeder brought in his juvenile Silkie stock for sale.

I am in the Whittier area till the 7th. I am looking for Silkie, Fizzle or Sizzle chicks in any color other than white. If anyone has them please let me know. Thank you...

Wes's Pets and Feed in El Monte (not far from Whittier) carries all breeds of LF and bantams mostly ordered from Privett Hatchery. He's a small store but I like going to him. Call him to find out if he carries Silkies currently as I've seen them in his brooder before - 626/442-0781. I got both a Dom and a Silkie pullet from him. He also has a private breeder bring in juvenile Silkies where you can tell their sex - not always but sometimes. A call can't hurt. I doubt he'll have Fizzle or Sizzle as his birds are mostly Privett stock but I've got birds from him before and have been pleased. If you know what to look for in a Silkie you can determine the chick quality for yourself when you see them - nice poof, 5 toes, bearded, etc.

That is great info. Thank you, I will give him a call tomorrow or just head on over.

I usually have frizzle, but not at this time. Hope to hear from you next trip =)
There may be someone on the LAUCE meet-up board that has frizzles in the Long Beach area if you post there.

Can you please post a link for the "LAUCE meet-up" thread. I can't seem to find it...

I probably should have spelled that out for you.
You can either search through the posts for silkies and frizzles, I believe you'll find both.
Or you can post and see who replies.
If you are in a hurry, contact Roberta, one of the organizers, I think she may be a source or know who is.

Howdy! I live in Huntington Beach. I have had GREAT experiences both at Midway City Feed and at the feed place on Newport Blvd in Costa Mesa. If you live in the area, they are both great. I know Midway City sells chicks, I bought mine there. They get day olds in on Wednesdays at noon with 95% guarantee on females. I don't know if Newport Blvd place sells chicks, but the staff is super friendly and very helpful (more personable if that's what you require). Just chiming in for feed stores in my area.
