How many little chickens do you have in your yard ?

I have 4 hens. 2 orpingtons, 1 barred rock and 1 leghorn. It will be a year next month since I became a chicken addict and I'm loving it!

We got this email from our agent saying "based on the underwriter's inspection" we had NO IDEA this was taking place. We've been with Foremost for only 2 years since they have our mobile home in another town. I'm calling every insurance company I can find tomorrow and getting quotes. I'm not sure Foremost would cancel us if they knew for sure we were zoned and the city said we could have 2 chickens. OK I have more than 2 but even if I did only have 2, do they want me to keep them inside my house? The email letter said we had to get rid of all the chickens AND THE CHICKEN COOP.
I think I'll yank both insurance policies from Foremost just to make me feel better.

Few weeks ago a a State Farm agent came to our house to give us a quote on homeowners insurance and she was absolutely facinated with my chikens (coop included). There was no mention of having to remove our chickens or the coop! We got the quote and everything is fine.

Well, if I decide against a second coop, I might have a solid blue marans pullet from our June hatch available. It's so hot in the SFV today. We went to Zuma Beach and it was so cold and windy there we came home.

Have you checked to see if it says anything in the policy you signed? If nothing was in the paperwork I don't think they can enforce it.

My agent was once again out of the office today. Probably another golf game. Anyway, Mercury Ins said chickens are no problem and they really want my business. I made an appt to go in tomorrow and sign the paperwork and take them a check. The Foremost agent has a suprise coming tomorrow.

I'm glad you found someone. We have Foremost and we have chickens. Nothing has ever been said and there's nothing in our contract. I have to mention. I used to live in Vista back in 1968 thru 1971. We lived out on Santa Fe Rd. the first time and then we moved onto East Vista Way and then onto Claudia. I'm sure it's changed since then. We had good friends in the Thunder Hills area. We all raised Siberian Huskies at that time.

flower, thanks for the welcome. I've had the "chicken" disease for several years. End of 1998 when I started house-hunting, I told my realtor that I would like a place where I could keep a couple of hens for the eggs. When we came to see this house and were in the backyard, first thing he said was "where are you putting your coop?" Moved in March '99 and soon after, went to Red Barn for 12 chicks (RIRs and EEs). I have had a few chickens less since then, until last year a raccoon (I'm sure) got my last hen. I just loved their sounds when I came home from work and let them range free in the back yard while I gardened -- so relaxing!

Sweet Violet, I hope you have solved your issue with the insurance. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise because your premium will now be less! Reminds me of when my daughter had gotten a jay walking ticket and our then car insurance was dropping her for a violation. It didn't matter that I tried to explain that it was a jay walking ticket. I went to Mercury and ended up paying less for the same coverage! BTW, last year a hose to my water heater busted and ran all night flooding the entire house. Had to vacate for three months while the house was repaired, but guess what? The house insurance reimbursed me for driving back and forth to the house to feed my hen, a couple of finches and fish! Your insurance is nuts!

NewHen, thanks so much, and please do keep me in mind should you have an extra blue marans pullet! You aren't kidding about it being so hot in the SFV! I drove to Porter Ranch yesterday around 4:30 PM and my car registered 110 on the freeway, but most every where else it was 109! Today is supposed to be the last day of this heat -- let's hope so.

hey fellow California chicken lovers... I live in Paso Robles and I'm looking for a home for a handsome Sebright (Bantam) rooster. Anyone know anyone?! Please help me before my neighbors shoot me!
