....For herding the flock (in my case i had twenty or more to round up) I employ a chunk of PVC to extend my arm out. I can walk just not very fast or steady. But I walk along with the pipe extended...

....But by far the easiest is Bribery. Start while they are captive already.... every time you holler Chick Chick Chick or even say it.... Have some sort of treat to toss down... A little black oil sunflower seed, Scratch, Meal worms, Left over Chicken from KFC..... You never seen hilarity when a hen grabs a chicken legg and the rest try to chase her down for one. But... they will clean up a chicken or turkey carcass before you finally throw it away. Meat is Good for them.

Hi deb, I like the lightweight PVC pipe idea. I use a broom handle as an extended arm when DH isn't home to help. And definitely treats are always a great help but after mine were "conditioned" to herd themselves with a command I didn't need the treats any more. Whatever works, of course!

Question? I read that human saliva is best not to give eaten food to chickens? I assume the chicken/turkey carcasses have not been touched with human saliva? Just trying to broaden my knowledge about poultry. I learn something new every day on these posts LOL

Powers been out twelve hours just came on and another wind storm is threatening to hit.

People next door lost a tree and their patio. They say this storm is NOT el nino... I believe it because its Freaking cold wind. And blowing the wrong direction.

Trees here are braced for east west west east wind. This is racing up the canyons coming from the south.

I have only seen it blow like this once before.... in San Diego. About thirty years ago. WE were due.

Im in west covina near L.A. i THINK im so cal. Never been good with geography. I was at kaiser in baldwin park. They had this flu tent to give ppl there shots. It almost looked like a hazmat tent. Yeah half of it blew up and onto another building. And the other half not sure if they collapsed it or it collapses on its own. Looked like a tornado had hit it. Im sure it didnt help thay it was between the huge hospital and the other medical building so im sure it was like a wind tunnel effect. But it was crazy. I didnt loose power but i know others did. I told my friend whos redoing our chicken run and what not. He needs to put up there coop before redoung the run. I dont need my chickens roosting up in the tree with winds like that. As is in 2 days ice lost 2 like 3 month old chickens. Im not quite sure how to tell mom. Dont know if they got too cold or what. I had told her one died. But this morning i found a second. I dont think the others were snuggling with them. We drove to phelan for them. They were jersey giants. Mom loves that breed. Now were down to one jersey giant chicken.

Not everything on the internet is necessarily factual but it always raises questions:

"They may appear to eat droppings however what you are probably seeing is the chicken eating the bugs crawling on the droppings. Droppings and fresh manure attracts flies and insects and chickens like to eat those insects."

"Best Answer: Yes, human saliva is toxic to birds. But since it was a just a little bit I don't think it will really harm him/her.But if it does, I don't think it will severely hurt her, I think it will just give him/her some minor sicknesses. You take good care of him/her and next time be careful while taking a picture next to him/her or having any activity with him or her next to your face. Hope I helped! =)

they do eat poo not bugs .... they eat it to replenish or fortify their gut biologics. Horses do the same.
