California-Southern

Just the ones listed, one each. That's one rooster to four girls. Not a good ratio, so I'm hoping two more girls will help balance it out.

My coop will comfortably fit 12 large fowl, but my run that's attached only accommodates 7.

The Orpington and New Hampshire are the largest. But all my chickens are shades of brown which seems boring. Some blue might spice it up!

I'll post a review of his place after I go, for sure.

Question. My mom has been bugging me. Does anyone know someone who has lavander orpingtons? Im willing to drive about 2 hours either way im in west covina. So la area is where im at she keeps bugging me saying we always get what chickens i want. The orpingtons can be of any age.
Northern California has a lot more breeders because their area is more conducive to chickeneering. However, the Inland Empire like Riverside, Norco, etc. have a lot of poultry breeders. Dare2Dream in Lompoc have several breeds available and deliver to the Los Angeles area on a posted schedule on their website but don't know if Lavender Orps are on their list of available breeds - I think D2D only deals in standard APA approved breeds and Easter Eggers. You might check Facebook too.

Help! I have room for only two more chickens. Which two should I get? These are from a breeder in Lakeside:

1) buff Orpington
2) New Hampshire
3) blue Wyandotte
4) Barnevelder

My BF wants the first two and I want the second two!

We're looking for larger breeds that will mix well with our existing flock: EE rooster and his girls - black/gold EE, barred Rock, speckled Sussex, salmon Faverolle.

As much as we all like a variety of colors/breeds in our backyards you might want to research temperaments of breeds before mixing. Yes, yes, I know, there are individuals in every breed that don't fit the norm, but you get a good idea of what breeds may be mellower than others when mixed together. A lot of owners love their Wyans but I've talked with an owner and read on MyPetChicken that Wyans have a tendency toward domination which in my mind translates to "bully" so I never tried one - pretty though. I have had a single NHR pet without any other chickens with her and she was a sweet pet but can't attest to her flock temperment but since they were a refined breeding of RIRs I would think the mentality would be similar. Our friend's Buff Orp was on the bossy side when she had chicks but seemed a nice flock member once she was past being a momma - there are also a variety of colors available in Orps. I've had no experience or dialogue with Barnie owners. Currently I have a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana that's been timid and non-combative toward her flockmates but since she turned 3 yrs old and in full maturity she has turned into a witch -- chasing the bantams, fighting and challenging and picking on all the flock members. We're thinking of re-homing her with a friend who rescues unwanted cockerels and battery hens and needs more hens for her ratio of roos. We once had a gentle alpha White Leghorn who was great with bantams and other flock members but after she turned 3 yrs old turned into an aggressive combative bird. We gave her time to settle down but after a couple weeks gave up and re-homed her. Sounds like 3-yrs-old is the magic number in our flock when the large fowl go bonkers. Our 5 and 4-yr-old Silkies are gentle souls and we don't need aggressive LFs around them - the Silkies get the short end of the stick in pecking order squabbles with larger breeds.
Also, has anyone ordered from East County Zoo? He seems friendly and knowledgeable from the few emails/texts I've sent, he does sexing and takes back roosters from any mis-sexed purchases, so that lead me to him. Never heard of this "Zoo" before. You may have found a new source for other SoCal customers to seek out.

Thanks!

I have experience with Orps, Wyandottes & Barnevelders and like each of them for different reasons.
The BLR Wyandottes are my favorite for personality and appearance, not sure if you are getting solid Blue Wyandottes or Blue Laced Red. Overall I would say the parent stock is the first consideration as to type and personality, also overall health.
I have admired some beautiful New Hamphsires at shows, but don't have them in my flocks.

Adding - I have had them in mixed flocks which include your breeds, as have other poultry people.

He's got BBS Wyandotte! Not laced, although a good true blue will have a thin dark boundary like lacing. I've never seen blues! So pretty.

I'm wary of Wyandottes because I've heard they can be a mixed bag. But I guess that's true of any breed.

I think before deciding we'll take a look at the parent stock. He has farm tours by appointment only. I've decided against several other places after seeing the facility, even if they had a great website or store front.

Fingers crossed!

Hello to all the new chicken enthusiasts!
It's fun to see your chicken pics when you have time to post.

We are new to chickens. We have just completed our coop/run and have 2 each Black Australorp, EE, Golden Sexlink and 3 Welsummers. All 6-8 weeks old in these pics.
Pretty sure 1 of the Welsummers is a roo.
I'll have to post some close up individuals when I get a chance.
