Has anyone successfully integrated their backyard flock with their middle-aged dog? How do you keep the chickens from coming up and attacking the dog? I have a 7y/o herding mix that can mind his own business but the girls have not been minding THEIRS and it creates problems.

thanks!

Quick question: my ginormously fluffy EE rooster makes the coop look like he gets into a pillow fight with himself every night. we first noticed him dropping feathers about a month ago but now the property is a snowstorm of Nero feathers. I wasn't expecting a major molt until he was 18 months, which is October. Is he just molting early? Anything I should watch out for?

this year has been a bit odd. Hot hot hot and suddenly normal temps too.

I was able to bury down to his skin around his saddles and saw some new ones. True to Easter egger form, they're a DIFFERENT color! LOL. He's splash-ish anyway so who knows what he'll look like this time next year. Love EEs! But man.... I should open up a pillow factory. Between Nero's early molt and the feather dropping 19 week olds...Ridiculous.

Yeh when my guineas started molting there was no evidence except enough feathers as if a guinea explodedd.....

Hi everyone! I have some roosters to re-home if anyone is interested. I have a BCM, a BCM mix, a fluffy feet grey something, a grey/black silkie. I don't have a photo of the silkie roo yet, but I'll take one if someone is interested? These are all crowing - not all at full volume yet, but they are trying!

I've dumped SO many roosters at all the feed stores around here, they don't want any more from me.

Quarantine is horrible! I keep thinking there must be something wrong with these pullets but... I think they just POOP THAT MUCH. Confined to a room in the house and only outside a little bit, I get to see like 95% of the poop they create. Gaaaaaaah! I think they cecal poop like half of it and they have loose watery poop during the day because it's hot, therefore = THE WALLS ARE SPLATTERED WITH POOP.

It's really quite the sight. Glad I'm remodeling that room after. If anything, I'll get down and actually do it just to get the poop out of there.

Anyone else have a similar experience with quarantine? Or tips and tricks? Or think there might actually be an issue with these pullets? They eat and drink....obviously. No nasal discharge, clear eyes, active. I put them on a low dose of corid because they're outside in my soil each day, but that's it.

Thanks!

Id offer to take the roos but my neighbors turned me in to code enforcemnt on having my roos. And they tried telling code enforcement i have more than 50 chickens. Psh i have under 30 adults. And 12 teens. 3 chicks. So not over 50. And 3 i have to rehome as there roos. Didnt plan for them but it happens. I hate code enforcemnet. Why pick on residence who have owned tbis home since the 50s. Ive lived here in ths house since i was 8. Im 25. But plz pick on us. Ignore the neighbors who rent and have been served eviction notices but are still there.

I WISH I could have roos!!!!! Very seriously considering a no-crow collar at some point in the future. The flock just doesn't seem right without a roo!

Well, can't offer any advice, but CAN sympathize with all the loose, watery poop! :-( sorry they're re-decorating your walls lady! They ARE gorgeous though!!!!!

I know how you feel!!! My house was built in 1903 - it used to be the main house for an Orchard that covered this whole end of the valley I live in. This valley didn't incorporate until 1969. The houses that surround me were all built between the 1970's and 1990's. This was a farming community. The un-incorporated areas are allowed farm animals - including roosters, but the rest of the valley - they are banned. I'm not zoned for ANY chickens, but recently, a 4-h member fought the city - to allow them to keep up to 6 hens - as long as you have 5,000 sq ft lot. The city is currently trying to pass an ordinance to allow anybody with a minimum of 5,000 sq ft. I have 2 acres. He basically said, if we sign up for 4-h that nobody will care how many hens I have. But roosters are a NO=NO and could jeopordize all my chickens.

I know - I love my silkie roos!!!

I have 3 no crow collars and have only had 1 rooster that they worked on. You have to almost CHOKE the rooster and still it only quiets them a little. I'm sure other people have better luck, but not me. I have had some that freak out so badly with it on, that I can't use them. I'll keep trying them, but unless it complete quiets them, they have to go!
