Oops...they're mixed. I've been bugging my other half about getting chickens, so for my birthday he surprised me with 6 babies. 2 BO, 1 dark brahma bantam, black sex linked, black maran, and another bantam (don't know the breed). Kind of worried the last lady is actually a little roo. Trying to get a potential home lined up in case she's a he.
How many girls do you have?

Out of 7 sexed pullets I've gotten 2 whoopsie roosters and the ONE straight run chick I got was also a boy! I wanted two more girls and got older pullets that you could tell were girls but that had its own slew of problems (quarantine in the laundry room for a month = POOP EVERYWHERE).

One roo and one hen have died since so now I'm at 6 girls and two boys.

What are you zoned for? I can have 25 chickens including up to four roosters but two is quite loud enough! At least other neighbors have roosters but mine has to take tops for crowing volume and frequency :(

If you have to give up your other bantam, you might want to get two more to replace him so your one remaining bantam isn't on her own. Unless Brahma bantams are close enough to normal size birds they'll be ok?

Good morning! We are not zoned for roosters AND our neighbor below has been quite vocal regarding her distaste for roosters. If the little guy starts crowing he'll have to leave

(My favorite of the group).

According to what I've read the dark brahma will be around 8 lbs. She's already holding her own in the flock, but I'll keep an eye on her for bullying.

Where in So-Cal are you located?

Fallbrook, about an hour north of you on a good day. A bantam at 8lbs! Brahmas are big. Did you see the slow mo video on YouTube going around of the light Brahma rooster exiting his coop? Yikes! she'll be just fine :)

keeping neighbors happy within reason is always a concern, they can make life ridiculous if they get upset and start making phone calls.

Are these your first? Little baby roos tend to be the most social and loving with their human caretakers. And the ones you gotta get rid of that break your heart. My girls are sweet, one in particular, but my boys are my kids. LOL.

Yup, first time chicken parent. I'm very familiar with Fallbrook. I grew up in Escondido and worked some in Fallbrook. Pretty area!

I did see that video...wow! It's like something out of a B horror film. Bantam vs. Mothra.

If I send some pics would you mind taking a guess at breed and gender? The chick came from a mixed bantam tub...and I know zero about chicken breeds.

SGV area here - had to share this box mates photo of Partridge Silkie and Cuckoo Breda in an 11x11 nestbox!

Hey you - MOVE!

No way -- YOU move!
That is so cute!!

I'm a bit north of all of you, Ventura county. I did live in Vista for a while - worked in Carlsbad. I currently have a pile of 4 silkies sitting in one box, on 10 eggs. They started with 12, but kicked out 2. I started with 7 broodies, but 3 decided they didn't want to stick it out. I gave my silkies individual boxes, and they hate them. These girls started brooding outside of the boxes entirely. I can't wait to see how they deal with the chicks.
