For anyone with horses that need to evacuate these fires, there is a stable in Hidden Hills that has room - message me and I'll pass along her number.

My thoughts go out to everyone in the path of these fires. Please stay safe everyone!

Holy crap! I have been on this site for about 2 years and didn't know this thread existed!!!! I'm from the San Fernando Valley (North Hiils) if anyone is around!!!

Sometimes I feel like I am a chicken lover in hiding in my area because some people don't have nice things to say about people who have chickens so hit me up if you want to talk!!!

Welcome, I am in Woodland Hills. Just started with the chickens. My neihbors are all excited because I promised them all eggs! haha.

What is it they say? Do you have a rooster?

I doubt anyone in my neighborhood would even know I had chickens if I hadn't told them. I have 3 girls and they don't make enough noise to be heard 10' away. I clean their coop every morning so there isn't any odor. What's to object to?

We have neighbors catty corner to our backyard fence. They have chickens and that's how I developed my chicken lust. But my husband never had any idea they were there until I started discussing the possibility of building a coop with him.

Truth is, the people in my hood who do know are very supportive about it. And just the other day I was in Trader Joe's buying 4 bags of shredded cabbage ($1.29 each). A woman seeing it asked what I did with all that cabbage. When I said I feed it to the chickens I thought I'd have to pick her up from the floor but then she laughed. Gotta leave 'em laughing!

Thanks everyone for welcoming me :wee

What is it they say? Do you have a rooster?

I don't have a rooster but I would love one. Almost had one but gave him away because we didn't fall under code for keeping the rooster. So I have only two neighbors that know I have chickens. They aren't upset over it. It's funny because one of my neighbors made me promise I wouldn't tell her husband I have chickens. But it is only because he wants chickens and she doesn't want him to get another hobby (apparently, he has started many hobbies and never finished them). I believe she told him it was illegal. But she loves them and comes to visit them often. The other neighbor is literally my next door neighbor and he found out because one day we were in the back yard and he just walked it. He's fine with them.

I am on the nextdoor app and there were a couple threads about chickens in it. Some of the people live near me that replied and they were starting bashing the poor girl who posted.... I can tell you it wasn't nice and then became a political talk about why farm animals are in the suburbs and how it should be outlawed. It became very daunting to know people near me just bash chickens and honestly was scared to reply and defend chickens.

My chickens can be loud. Two are very vocal, one is very talkative and when one starts at least 3 join in. Yes no odor from us either. We clean at least once a day. No one has complained around me but I do keep the chicken conversation away from the people I know who said stuff if I see them. LOL plus I bribe my neighbor with eggs every so often.

I also know someone else definitely has chickens in my neighborhood because we hear the egg song. Before we had chickens my mom used to laugh because she used to hear it growing up. I think I get scared if someone complains because our coop is a little short of the required distance it needs to be from a living dwelling. So as long no one complains I'm fine. I read incorrectly what the distance was when I built the coop.

I go to the market and they always ask why we buy so much cabbage, parsley and sweet anis. I tell them it's for the chickens and they are always dumbfounded. They say... oh you raise them to eat. I respond with no, they are my pets. .... then silence. I smile and walk away (after I pay) It makes me giggle.

Sorry for my rambling.....

We have a facebrook group for local chicken folks, and one of the ladies on there that gets a group of us to order, and we order directly from Scratch n Peck Feed, and split the cost of the shipping. Since she's ordering 5000 lbs at a time, the costs are super low and we get fresh feed. With the shipping costs, it works out we still pay less than at the feed stores.
I’m going to see if there is a FB group in my area. Sounds like a great idea!
