yes-cerritos...

the city came down to my friend (two houses down) and made him get rid of all of his roosters, quails, and to only keep two hens... TWO HENS!!!...

so i have to hide my birds, and keep them in somewhat sound proof conditions... i'm hoping that my giant cochin roosters don't get that loud...

Good luck! I'm not sure I'm allowed to have any (Lake Forest) so we've just got 2 hens. I'd love more, but I think that would be pushing it, and I'm hoping my neighbors don't complain.

Hi, I'm brand new here. I don't have any chickens yet, still researching and figuring out the housing and such. I'm in Altadena (which is right next to Pasadena, in the mountains). I am a wildlife rehabilitator and I want to start keeping chickens and also a goat or two, so that I have fresh dairy to use as a base formula for baby animals. Rehabbers have traditionally used powdered formula milk replacer, but in the past few years there have been several incidents with the formulas being contaminated and baby animals dying from it. So I'm working on designing a base formula from raw goat milk, but it does not have enough protein for some baby animals, but if I could add eggs to the formula that would up the protein content.

Plus, chickens are so cute and funny!! (all that other stuff is really just an excuse - I want pet chickens but I'm mentally justifying it with the whole 'it's not for me, it's for the animals!' routine...)

Love the way you are thinking! I think it's so fantastic that you would want to feed your "rehabilitatees" a natural meal of fresh goat milk and eggs, instead of store-bought formula. That sounds wonderful! If we didn't live right in the middle of the suburbs, I'd love to get a couple goats or sheep too (I knit extensively, so the thought of using my own wool is so tempting!!)
** plus, I'm also a little bit jealous because I got a degree in Wildlife Resources 15 years ago, but don't work in that field. I love the thought of nursing these animals back to health!
As far as the chickens go, I agree -- they are just fun and quirky pets to have : )

I'm lucky to live in a very rural area of Altadena (I'm inside the boundary of Angeles Crest National Forest), and my neighborhood is very ecologically conscious, so keeping chickens or other barnyard animals isn't a problem.

The only problem I anticipate is that we do see coyotes from time to time. There has never been a case of one coming into a yard and taking pets - they are kept pretty contented and busy eating rats and ground squirrels in the hillsides - but I'm still going to build my coop along the side of my house, the corner the farthest away from the hillside, and put my chickens inside and lock them up at night. I've got a lot of animal cages back there for juveniles in the early stages of pre-release and have never had a problem, even with baby squirrels in the cages back there, so it should be okay.

HELLO ALL! Whos ready for a meet-up / swap / funday~playday with yer chickens!
The first [of hopefully more to come] meet-up of us Southern CA / IE BYCers that want to smooze with like minded BYCers;

PLEASE PM ME WITH WHAT DATE WILL WORK FOR YOU SO WE CAN NAIL DOWN ONE DATE. This park is chicken friendly too! Mucho details to follow....just wanted to get this out ASAP!

April 30 or May 1st. The Ventura poultry Show is on April 9. Some of us would prefer to attend the show than a local meet since we are more flexible . Easter week-end is April 23 & 24 for those who observe this event.

I would really like to attend to meet you'all. I'm totally jammed up all the way through April with volunteer obligations (anyone here golf? I've got two separate golf tourneys, one on April 8th in Carlsbad, one on April 22 in Escondido. Both will have live animals at the event, including 'my' cheetah, Victor - I helped raise him on South Africa, now he lives in San Diego.) I have the first two weekends in May (April 30 and May 1, and May 7th and 8th), then my life goes all crazy again.

If I have infant animals in, however, I won't be able to get away anyway, so, now that I think about it, never mind! Plan for whenever and I'll see what I can do!
